    I was looking at this mill, but then my friend purchased the Little Machine Shop 3990 Hi Torque mill, its belt driven, has 3/4th hp motor, solid column and air spring to help hold the head up. Its movement is slightly under the 704, table is a bit smaller but theres about 8 inches of unusable table space on the 704 from what he was telling me.

    Carefully check the motor specs before running one up that high. I would recommend going direct drive and use a sensorless vector VFD. A 2 HP would be my choice for your machine, you don't have to use all of it, but it will give you better low speed performance. I can run mine from about 10 to 5000 RPM.

    The G0704 comes with a 1HP brushed DC motor. I would like something around 1.5-2kW (2-3HP) that can do rigid tapping and will spin at 5000 rpm. You do not need a positioning servo to do rigid tapping. I do it regularly on my Bridgeport mill, with a standard VFD and induction motor.
